CGM Global Summit 2025 – Reflections Through a Banker’s Lens (Series 8/9)
Climate Resilience in Asia: The Role of Finance Beyond Regulation - Liza Jansen, CFA Head of Responsible Investment, Prudential moderated by Henry S. address a vital question: what does it take for finance in Asia to move beyond regulation and truly build climate resilience?
1️⃣ Beyond Compliance to Resilience In banking we’ve focused on regulatory checklists and disclosures. Liza challenged us to shift; design portfolios, infrastructure and capital flows with a mindset of resilience from day one. Asia’s growth trajectory and climate exposure mean we must anticipate stress, not just respond to it.
2️⃣ Data + Local Context She emphasised that deploying Western finance models without localisation won’t suffice. From hazard modelling to adaptation tools, finance in Asia needs data and frameworks tailored to our ecosystems.
3️⃣ Malaysia’s Moment Our financial system has an opportunity to lead in adaptation-finance, to bridge capital to resilient infrastructure, to build trust in communities facing climate risk. Collaboration between banks, regulators and corporates is fundamental for this next stage.
My Reflection
For me, this session reaffirmed that finance isn’t just about managing risk; it’s about enabling continuity.
Resilience isn’t optional, it’s integral.
When data, governance, and people align with purpose, we build systems that endure shocks and recover stronger. In the end, climate resilience isn’t only about saving the planet, it’s about safeguarding the people, industries, and futures we finance.
