Relationship Managers as Drivers of Climate Transition - A Journey : Helping SMEs Transition: Why Relationship Managers Play a Critical Role ??

When discussing climate transition and sustainability, large corporations often receive the most attention. But in reality, SMEs form the backbone of many economies and supply chains.

The challenge is that many SMEs are still struggling to understand: ❓What climate transition means for their business ❓Where to begin ❓How much it may cost ❓Whether sustainability efforts will actually benefit them

Some SMEs also worry that sustainability simply means: ❌ More compliance ❌ More reporting ❌ Higher operational costs

But transition does not always require large-scale transformation overnight. In many cases, small operational improvements can already create meaningful business value.

For example, an SME in the food processing sector may gradually begin to: 🔹 Replace old equipment with energy-efficient machinery 🔹 Reduce electricity wastage 🔹 Improve fuel management for logistics 🔹 Digitalise manual processes 🔹 Strengthen waste management practices

Over time, these improvements may help the business: ✔ Reduce operating costs ✔ Improve productivity ✔ Increase operational efficiency ✔ Strengthen resilience against rising energy prices ✔ Meet growing buyer expectations

This is where Relationship Managers (RMs) can make a real difference. Guided by Bank Negara Malaysia’s CCPT, RMs can help SMEs: 🔹 Simplify sustainability discussions 🔹 Identify practical improvement areas 🔹 Support gradual transition efforts 🔹 Connect customers to suitable financing solutions

Importantly, many SMEs do not need perfect sustainability strategies immediately.

Often, they simply need practical guidance, realistic transition pathways, and a trusted banking partner who understands their operational realities.

Sometimes, transition starts with small steps but those small steps can gradually build stronger, more resilient, and more competitive businesses.

Relationship Managers plays a crucial guidance in taking these small steps.
